BACK TO SAFETY RECALLS
Possible Defective Steering Column/Handlebar
July 15th, 2014

Re: Sea-Doo® SPARKTM Watercraft - Possible defective steering column / handlebar

Dear Sea-Doo Watercraft Owner,

This notice is being sent to you in cooperation with the U.S. Coast Guard and Transport Canada and is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the Federal Boat Safety and other applicable laws. BRP is conducting a voluntary safety recall of some MY2014 Sea-Doo Watercraft models. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected watercraft.

What is the potential problem?

The steering column / handlebar may have been incorrectly manufactured by our supplier and it may break under rough riding conditions. This could cause the operator to lose his balance and hit the personal watercraft resulting in serious injuries or even death.

What should you do?

Call an authorized BRP Sea-Doo Watercraft dealer and make an appointment to have your watercraft repaired. The dealer will perform this work at no charge to you.

As you are now aware of the details of this safety recall, if you continue to use your personal watercraft, in the above described condition, be aware of the risks described herein.

What to do if you feel this notice is an error?

This notice was mailed to you according to the most current information we have available. If you no longer own this watercraft or some information in this notice is incorrect, please contact BRP at your earliest convenience.

If you have questions, need assistance, or to find the nearest authorized BRP Sea-Doo dealer:

Visit www.sea-doo.com
Or call: 1-888-272-9222
9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Eastern time Monday to Friday

Your continued satisfaction with your watercraft is important to us. Please understand that we have taken this action in the interest of your safety and your watercraft's proper operation. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

After-Sales Service Department

It has been sung from the rooftops and BRP has heard the song of the fiddler on the roof. Ya I'm in weird over -caffeinated mode sorry :p

I wonder how long it will take BRP to send everyone their notice in the mail. We learn these things quick through social media but will be interesting to see just when this notice arrives in the mail :)

Finally officially official, I wonder if its applicable to the entire 2014 production run or if the problem was corrected on the later runs...
I dropped mine off yesterday so ill get to see what the new ones look like, if any different.. ill post some pics when I get it back. the bars seem to break in different places, the yolk, the grips, the top bar, has me curious to how they were incorrectly made. as long as its fixed is the important part.

My dealer just ordered me handle bars this morning automatically. He also said the wire harness issue is included in the recall too.

Ouch, just imagine how this will cost BRP. Parts + labor...
GH had this on last night, I got a call from my dealer this morning telling me to not drive the 8 hours cause he can't release them to me due to the recall, at least it's for a good reason but I start paying for them as of today so it's more than a little frustrating that I haven't even got them and no timeline for the repair . The warauntee will run out before I get them

my dealer said one worry he has is how much BRP will pay him? the first few will take the longest because it is the first time they will be doing the work. he has 10 sparks in total to do.
Ugh... Just called my dealer who said that parts are on back order with no estimation of time frame. He added me to a waiting list and advised me not to ride until the repair is done. Beyond frustrating!!! I'm sure summer will be over before we're back on the water! But I am thankful they are finally owning up to the issue!
Interesting. I have not got a single notice about anything yet and god forbid my dealer contacts me  Gotta love south florida....rush to take your money and screw cust. service.

My dealer love charge me through the ass for everything but they truly have great customer service. And I keep going back with broken things so it's win win
Your a lucky man rthonb. Do we know if its the month it was built or all the skis in general?

Hi serpent710,

The recall only affects certain 2014 Sea-Doo Sparks - we're sending out letters to owners of affected units. Not all Sparks are affected.

Just called my dealer with my VIN and mine is one of the affected Sparks- there are 3 recalls for my VIN- engine access panel (already taken care of), steering column, and wire harness. Guess I'll just have to stick to riding my Blaster until the Spark gets upgraded...

I'm included on both the bars and wire issue too. I will still use my ski.. Just be a little more careful until it is all fixed.

Your dealer will be able to quickly check if your unit is affected by running your VIN.

The dealer enters in the warrentee when you pick the ski up. that is when the date starts so I would not worry about it, unless they told you they already entered it.
I called BRP and asked when the handlebars would be sent out to dealers. She said there are 2000 being sent out next week and continuing until the end of summer. She then followed up with an email asking me for my vin to verify that and other recalls. I've pasted the email below.

Good day Mr. Carter

Thank you for taking the time to contact BRP.

In response to your request, please reply to this E-mail with your VIN, vehicle identification number, in order to verify all recalls.

You can reach us by replying to this email or you can contact us at T + 888.272.9222 if you have any other questions or comments.

Thank you for contacting BRP.
